At an upcoming investment summit in Toronto, Prime Minister Mark Carney will present a variety of potential investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on B.C.’s coast, a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. The detailed 66-page “prospectus,” obtained by CBC News, outlines these projects and aims to attract $1 trillion in investments from international investors and Canadian business leaders.
The summit, scheduled for September 14 and 15 and organized in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, will focus on showcasing these opportunities to bolster economic growth amidst trade disruptions and global uncertainties. The projects span across different sectors, with a total of 167 investment possibilities categorized into conventional and clean energy, mining, marine infrastructure, power utilities, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and transportation.
Some notable projects highlighted in the prospectus include a $57 billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a proposed $35 billion West Coast Oil Pipeline, and the $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project. Additionally, plans for a high-speed passenger rail line between Calgary and Edmonton, a long oil pipeline connecting Alberta to British Columbia, and various clean energy initiatives are also detailed in the document.
While some projects are more advanced, such as the Ksi Lisims LNG project described as “fully permitted and shovel ready,” others are in preliminary stages of development. The prospectus also emphasizes Canada’s leadership in artificial intelligence, offering investment opportunities in data centers, quantum computing, and other cutting-edge technologies.
The investment summit aims to attract a diverse range of investors to support these projects and foster economic growth beyond traditional markets, especially amid escalating trade tensions. Through these initiatives, the Canadian government seeks to diversify energy exports, promote sustainable development, and strengthen economic ties globally.
