The parents of a 23-year-old woman who tragically passed away following wisdom teeth extraction at a dental clinic in southern Manitoba are still grappling with grief and seeking clarity nearly two years after the heartbreaking incident. Virginia Blatz lost her life on November 27, 2024, after undergoing the procedure at Boundary Trails Dental Centre in Morden, Man. A postmortem examination revealed that her death resulted from local anesthetic systemic toxicity due to an unintended injection of the anesthetic into a blood vessel.
Virginia’s mother, Victoria Blatz, shared that her daughter had been experiencing mouth pain before the appointment and was eager to have her wisdom teeth removed. After dropping Virginia off at the clinic on the fateful morning, Victoria received a distressing call informing her that her daughter was experiencing a seizure. Upon her return, Victoria described the scene as chaotic and nightmarish, expressing the profound trauma she experienced.
As the second anniversary of Virginia’s passing approaches, her father, Dulaney Blatz, expressed the family’s ongoing quest for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. Dr. Ronald Janz, who was overseeing Virginia’s care during the dental procedure, has faced scrutiny from the Manitoba Dental Association, with restrictions placed on his ability to administer local anesthetics.
Despite the family filing a formal complaint against Janz in June, they have faced challenges in obtaining information about the investigation. The dental association clarified that due to regulatory protocols, details of the inquiry are not directly shared with the family, causing significant frustration and anguish. In response, the association emphasized its commitment to a thorough and fair investigative process while acknowledging the family’s anguish and the need for transparency.
The Blatz family, deeply impacted by the loss of their daughter, described Virginia as a compassionate and hardworking individual with aspirations of pursuing a career as a welder. They emphasized the need for accountability and closure, seeking justice to prevent similar tragedies from befalling other families. The community mourns the loss of Virginia, a bright and promising individual whose absence has left an irreplaceable void in their lives.
