A man has been arrested and charged by Toronto police in connection with the recent arson attack on the residence of a Scarborough MP. Roshvin Crofton, 24, faces multiple charges including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possessing incendiary materials, and violating probation terms. Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the incident has been confiscated, with authorities seeking information on its whereabouts leading up to the arson.

The alleged arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home, who represents the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. Police are also on the lookout for a second suspect connected to the case. According to police reports, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, which subsequently caught fire, causing damage to a third vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Following the arrest, Zahid expressed gratitude towards Toronto police for their swift action and emphasized the ongoing investigation to determine the motive behind the incident. Zahid, serving as a Liberal backbencher since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and holds the vice-chair position in the Canada-China legislative association. The incident has garnered widespread condemnation, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
