Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz revealed on Wednesday that Israel is awaiting approval from the United States to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. This initiative, known as “voluntary emigration,” has sparked concerns of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing among Palestinians in Gaza. Minister Katz emphasized Israel’s readiness to assist in the emigration process through various means, despite Palestinian resistance to the idea.
According to reports from Yedioth Ahronoth, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, associated with the far-right Jewish Power party, is set to announce a plan called “Disengagement 710” that aims to gradually remove Palestinians from Gaza over a seven-year period. The plan is expected to be unveiled as part of Ben-Gvir’s campaign for the upcoming legislative elections in October.
Minister Katz highlighted the necessity of the migration, stressing that finding host countries for the Palestinians is crucial. He expressed the Israeli government’s preparedness to facilitate the emigration process using all available means, pending approval from the U.S. authorities.
The discussions follow the 2023 attacks on Israel led by Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and hostilities. Subsequently, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have led to extensive destruction and loss of lives. Despite previous considerations of displacing Gaza residents permanently, recent peace plans do not include such measures.
