A woman in Winnipeg is still recovering but relieved that everyone is safe after she rescued a child and the child’s father who fell into the Red River. Jayclyn Morrissette, 32, was at St. John’s Park in Winnipeg’s North End on the evening of August 24 when she saw a young girl struggling in the water. Morrissette sprang into action, rushing to the riverbank as her neighbor informed the child’s parents who were frantically searching for their child.
As the father jumped into the water to save the child, Morrissette realized he was struggling to resurface and bravely jumped in to assist. With the help of her neighbor, they managed to pull the father out of the water. Morrissette then swam back to rescue the drowning child, swimming backward to the riverbank with the unconscious child on her chest.
Performing CPR that she learned over a decade ago, Morrissette and her neighbor administered aid to the child until first responders arrived. The child was initially in critical condition but has since stabilized and is expected to recover fully. Despite the successful rescue, Morrissette experienced nightmares following the incident, haunted by the memory of the child’s condition.
In addition to the emotional toll, Morrissette also sustained neck and shoulder injuries during the rescue. She is currently taking painkillers and awaiting further medical evaluation. While the identities of the individuals involved were not disclosed by the police, they commended Morrissette’s courage and selflessness in risking her own safety to save strangers.
Morrissette, a modest mother, downplayed her heroic actions, emphasizing that anyone would have done the same in that situation. She urged parents to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their children, emphasizing the importance of safety around water.
