The Alberta government issued an apology following the release of an updated statement from Premier Danielle Smith in honor of the province’s 121st birthday. The original statement, issued on Tuesday around 10 a.m. MT, acknowledged the enduring connection and stewardship of the land by Indigenous Peoples. However, the subsequent version, released about an hour later, omitted this reference while incorporating other alterations.
During a press conference focused on education investments, Smith addressed the situation, labeling the alteration as a “glitch” and expressing uncertainty about the reason behind the update. The French version of the revised statement retained the mention of Indigenous people, unlike the English version.
A provincial spokesperson, Yonathan Sumamo, clarified that the updated version was released erroneously and assured that the original statement remains valid. The government expressed regret for any confusion caused by the error.
Trevor Mercredi, grand chief of the Treaty 8 First Nations, voiced deep concern over the removal of the reference to Indigenous Peoples, emphasizing that Indigenous Nations have always been an integral part of Alberta’s history. He stressed that Indigenous Nations predate the existence of Alberta and cannot be disregarded for political convenience.
Smith acknowledged the diverse cultures and communities, including Indigenous peoples, that have contributed to Alberta’s development during the press conference. She highlighted the importance of celebrating individuals from all backgrounds for their role in shaping the province.
