According to Israel Katz, the official was captured following the operation, with an Israeli security source revealing him as the head of Hamas’s internal security service to Reuters.
In the aftermath of the strike, the camp saw destruction with tents and personal belongings burnt and scattered, along with remnants of a car visibly damaged and charred. Medical personnel reported that three children were among the casualties in the military operation, which not only claimed lives but also left others wounded. This incident marks at least the fifth in a series of assaults on the enclave in recent weeks, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Expressing anguish over the tragedy, Abu Al Abd, a resident of the camp, pleaded for mercy, especially for the children who were present during the raid. Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had cautioned about “targeted strikes” in response to children flying kites that landed in Israeli territory.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) justified the operation by citing recent escalated attacks by Hamas against Israeli civilians and troops. The IDF stated that the strike was necessary to eliminate the identified threat posed by the terrorist target. Israel’s defense minister reiterated their policy of actively pursuing and neutralizing Hamas terrorists to safeguard Israeli citizens.
Among the victims of the raid was Faiza al-Bahtini’s nephew, adding to the distress of families caught in the crossfire. Al-Bahtini herself had been displaced from the north following a previous attack that claimed the life of her 14-year-old nephew, illustrating the recurring cycle of devastation faced by families in the region.
Despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire that came into effect on October 11, which halted large-scale conflict but did not entirely stop Israeli strikes, the Gaza Health Ministry reported over 1,300 civilian deaths. Hamas condemned the latest attack as a severe violation of civilian lives and accused Israel of continuing a brutal campaign against Palestinians despite the ceasefire agreement. Hamas called on international intervention to halt Israel’s alleged violations and uphold the ceasefire terms.
