Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections across Canada. The constituencies up for grabs are North Vancouver–Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches–East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord in Quebec.
With current vacancies, the Liberals hold 170 seats in the House of Commons, while opposition parties collectively have 166 seats. To maintain control of the legislative agenda, the Liberals need to secure victories in at least two of the upcoming byelections.
The most closely watched race is anticipated to unfold in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord. Former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who represented the riding since 2018, recently resigned after being appointed to the Senate. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are in contention for the seat, with polls indicating a tight race between the two parties. The Liberal candidate is Daniel Gobeil, while Caroline Dubé is running for the Bloc.
Additional candidates in the Chicoutimi–Le Fjord riding include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.
In Beaches–East York, candidates are vying to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
Meanwhile, in North Vancouver–Capilano, the race is on to replace former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who won the riding in the 2025 federal election. Wilkinson, a former cabinet minister, relinquished his seat in July after being appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

The Liberals have future opportunities to secure the necessary wins for a majority if they do not succeed in all three byelections.
Additionally, there are pending byelections in Quebec’s Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton and Rosemont–La Petite–Patrie ridings, as well as in Ontario’s Scarborough North riding. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to step down from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton–Melville, while Conservative MP Larry Brock will resign from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford–Brant South–Six Nations next month.
