In Coleville, Saskatchewan, Dean Roberts observed a sizable grey drone taking flight over his 4,000-hectare farm, which cultivates various crops like canola, wheat, barley, and lentils. The drone, known as DJI T100, is the largest spray drone in Canada, equipped with a 100-liter tank approved by the federal government for spraying pesticides.
During a demonstration, the drone’s tank was filled with water as it maneuvered through the farm. Roberts discussed how this technology could enhance their farming practices, especially in situations where traditional ground rigs cannot operate due to wet conditions. He noted that the drone could offer a viable solution for applying fungicides to combat leaf diseases in crops like lentils.
Roberts emphasized that the drone represents the ongoing technological advancements adopted by Prairie farmers to boost crop yields. However, he highlighted Canada’s lag in adopting agricultural technologies compared to countries like the U.S., China, Brazil, Japan, and Australia, where drone spraying is already prevalent.
Regulatory hurdles have been a significant impediment to the adoption of agricultural technologies in Canada, according to Roberts. Experts cite bureaucratic challenges, infrastructure limitations, and labor shortages as key factors hindering the country’s agricultural exports growth compared to its global counterparts.
The federal government reports that Canada exports approximately $100 billion worth of agri-food products annually. However, the country’s market share has been declining, slipping from fifth to seventh place on the global food export leaderboard. The analysis notes that while Canada’s food exports have quadrupled since 2000, other countries have witnessed a five-fold growth in their exports.
Roberts and Evan Shout, a prominent figure in the agriculture industry, raised concerns about infrastructure challenges, particularly in transporting crops to global markets. They highlighted issues with rail transportation delays and the need for skilled labor in farming operations, emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges to enhance Canada’s agricultural productivity and exports.
Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald affirmed the government’s commitment to overcoming obstacles faced by farmers and promoting Canadian agri-food exports through investments in critical infrastructure projects. The national food security strategy aims to reduce red tape, increase domestic food production, and enhance export capacity to benefit Canadians while addressing global market demands.
While boosting exports is a key goal for Canada, experts like Jennifer Clapp suggest a careful approach, advocating for sustainable agricultural practices and supporting eco-friendly agriculture globally.
