Crystal MacCormac, a resident of Charlottetown, experienced a poignant moment when her mother visited her PEI apartment after 11 years of living in Ontario. Recognizing herself in a childhood photo on the wall, her mother’s memory lapses became apparent during subsequent visits, raising concerns for Crystal. In 2020, amidst the pandemic, Crystal’s increased time with her mother allowed her to observe the decline in her mental faculties. By 2024, the situation worsened, leading to a diagnosis of vascular dementia for her 65-year-old mother.
Drawing from past experiences caring for her own grandmother, Crystal’s family had already discussed end-of-life plans with her mother, providing clarity and guidance when the dementia diagnosis was confirmed. This foresight proved invaluable as they navigated the challenges of caring for her mother. Collaborating with social services, P.E.I.’s home care program, and the Alzheimer’s Society, they received crucial support in managing her mother’s condition and their own mental well-being.
Despite the emotional toll of watching her mother’s decline and making tough decisions, Crystal found solace in honoring her mother’s wishes and advocating for her well-being. The transition to a nursing home was particularly difficult, as it conflicted with her mother’s earlier desires, but the pre-established plans helped guide their actions. While the journey remains arduous, Crystal finds strength in knowing they made decisions together as a family, ensuring her mother’s comfort and safety.
