WestJet passengers face uncertainty regarding financial protection in case of flight disruptions due to a potential strike, as recent insurance purchases may not cover travel inconveniences resulting from the labor dispute. Travelers who acquired insurance before the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced a high strike mandate could have been eligible for coverage. However, with the strike threat looming over the upcoming long weekend in August, insurance providers may now categorize the situation as a “known event,” leading to potential refusal of coverage.
Insurance company Manulife has advised that benefits related to the potential strike may not apply, according to a memo circulated to travel professionals. Martin Firestone, a travel insurance specialist at Travel Secure in Toronto, emphasized that newly purchased travel insurance will still protect against events like illness or death but may not cover flight disruptions caused by the strike.
In the event of flight cancellations, airlines usually rebook or refund passengers, but Firestone stressed the importance of comprehensive insurance beyond just flight costs. He highlighted the significance of trip interruption insurance, which can safeguard expenses beyond airfare, such as missed cruise costs due to flight disruptions.
For travelers without insurance, options are limited if a strike occurs, with the airline obligated to rebook or refund tickets. While alternative carriers may be considered for rebooking, the convenience might not match original travel plans. Additionally, cancellation for any reason insurance can partially cover expenses related to strikes, albeit with limitations on reimbursement amounts.
Despite concerns, the possibility of a strike may diminish if the union and company reach an agreement before the end of July. WestJet’s CEO remains optimistic, stating that a strike vote is a customary negotiation step and not a definite indication of a strike. The union president echoes a commitment to negotiation over strike action, emphasizing the desire to avoid disruptions. WestJet faced a significant labor dispute in 2024 involving airline mechanics, impacting numerous travelers during the Canada Day weekend.
