Esther Okoronkwo’s goal in the 35th minute secured a 1-0 victory for AFC Toronto against Halifax Tides FC on Saturday, marking Toronto’s second consecutive win. The triumph extended Toronto’s lead in the Northern Super League standings to nine points over Vancouver, who is currently in second place within the six-team league. Vancouver will face Calgary in their upcoming match.
Toronto boasts the second-best goal difference (29-21) in the NSL, with Ottawa holding the lead in this regard. On the other hand, Halifax’s winless streak has now reached eight games (0-7-2), with their last victory dating back to July 7 against Calgary.
Both Toronto and Halifax will play their next matches on September 13, with Toronto hosting Vancouver and Halifax welcoming Ottawa.
In another match, Vancouver Rise dominated the Calgary Wild with a 6-0 victory at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Latifah Abdu scored in the 15th and 53rd minutes, with Jessica De Filippo adding a goal just before halftime. Quinn, Mariah Lee, and Lisa Pechersky also contributed to the Rise’s impressive win.
The Rise (9-5-5) are now six points behind AFC Toronto in the league standings but have moved four points ahead of Ottawa Rapid and Montreal Roses. Calgary (6-11-2) currently sits in fifth place.
Vancouver controlled 62% of possession and outshot Calgary 24-11 (8-5) on target. Goalkeeper Morgan McAslan kept a clean sheet for Vancouver, who also took eight corners during the match.
In their next game, Vancouver Rise FC will face Calgary Wild FC, aiming to continue their winning streak.
