Brian Brown, a retired individual from Manitoba, was left searching for his bedroom’s triple dresser only to find the front panel of one drawer. Expressing his frustration, Brown mentioned that it had taken them a decade to renovate the house, where they had resided for 22 years, and the tornado’s destruction occurred in just 10 seconds.
The tornado struck the century-old farmhouse in Rossburn, located about 275 kilometers west of Winnipeg, causing widespread devastation. Brown described the unprecedented force of the wind, which shattered windows, blew in the front door, and uprooted trees, leaving a trail of destruction.
According to reports from Environment and Climate Change Canada, severe thunderstorms engulfed the region, resulting in wind gusts ranging from 70 to 100 kilometers per hour in various areas of the province. Additionally, quarter-sized hail was reported in the Shell Valley, with another tornado sighted in the Roblin area.
Mayor Shirley Kalyniuk of Rossburn Municipality confirmed that the tornado affected at least one other residence in the community. Despite the intensity of the situation, Brown and his wife, Bernadine, managed to seek shelter just in time, avoiding serious injuries as glass shards and debris flew around them.
The couple’s cats were unharmed, but many of their possessions, including essential items like glasses and hearing aids, were buried under the debris. The Browns, who had purchased the farmhouse over two decades ago near Brian’s childhood home, had been diligently working to restore the historic property.
As they contemplate the next steps amidst the devastation, Bernadine mentioned the challenges they face, especially with Brian battling cancer. Environment Canada announced plans to assess the tornado’s impact on the community, while Mayor Kalyniuk assured support for affected families through discussions with the municipal council.
Despite the upheaval, the Browns found solace in the support of family and friends, with neighbors offering to care for their horses. They are also looking to engage with their insurance provider to navigate the recovery process. Brian acknowledged the overwhelming task ahead, emphasizing that determining the way forward is currently beyond their capacity.
