Trysten Vincent faced a terrifying moment when her five-year-old daughter’s head went underwater at Manuels River last weekend. She described feeling completely helpless as she saw her daughter in distress. Fortunately, a stranger, Ian MacDonald, who was also present at the swimming hole in Conception Bay South, acted quickly and prevented a potential drowning.
Vincent recalled that it was the second time she had taken her daughter, Stella Spacio, to swim at Manuels River. Despite wearing a lifejacket and constant supervision, Spacio was unexpectedly pushed by the water and went under. Vincent immediately jumped in but was also swept underwater briefly before MacDonald intervened.
MacDonald, who was nearby with his stepdaughter, saw the situation unfold and swiftly moved to assist. He managed to grab Spacio’s shoulder as she drifted downstream, ensuring her safety. Vincent expressed immense gratitude towards MacDonald, acknowledging that without his timely intervention, the outcome could have been tragic.
Following the incident, Vincent and MacDonald, who were strangers prior, reunited and shared their harrowing experience. Vincent emphasized the importance of vigilance near water bodies, advising parents to closely monitor their children and always use lifejackets. Both Vincent and MacDonald underscored the unpredictable nature of water and the need for swimmers to stay cautious.
