Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, currently at the bottom of the standings, pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, in a Northern Super League match at McMahon Stadium. Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the home team in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before halftime, securing her brace and setting the Wild on a winning course. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, bringing their record to two wins, 12 losses, and two draws. Jyllissa Harris managed to score a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-game unbeaten run.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6). The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then secured a second goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had given the Tides a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to 4. Halifax took four of the six corners, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
