Quebec’s Environment Ministry teams successfully captured the elusive marsupial on Montreal’s South Shore on Tuesday afternoon. The animal, sedated for the journey, was transferred to its new home at the Granby Zoo. Galahad SPCA expressed hopes for the marsupial to enjoy a peaceful future in a sanctuary with proper care among other similar animals.
Earlier, the ministry reassured the public that the kangaroo, believed to have escaped from illegal captivity, did not pose a significant threat while in the wild. However, Frédéric Bérard, representing Galahad SPCA, argued that the kangaroo faced dangers such as getting hit by a car or becoming prey for other wildlife during its time in the wild.
Bérard criticized the ministry for what he perceived as a delayed response, emphasizing the importance of reporting sightings promptly to prevent harm to the animal. The captured marsupial, nicknamed Joey, was initially mistaken for a wallaby but was later confirmed to be a kangaroo that had escaped from a stable in the city.
The Environment Ministry emphasized the need for the public to maintain a safe distance from the animal to ensure its well-being and minimize risks. It also highlighted the illegal captivity issue, pointing out the prevalence of exotic animal listings for sale in Quebec and the necessity of permits for keeping such animals in captivity.
