A ball python measuring 1.07 meters is now under the care of the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society following its discovery at a sewage plant in east Windsor. The snake was found by Jeff Miller, the chief operator at the Little River Pollution Control Plant, last Friday. Initially spotted on the plant’s inlet screens nearly 7.6 meters underground, the snake eventually made its way into a collection bin and attempted to climb to safety.
According to Ed Valdez, the executive director of pollution control at the City of Windsor, Miller stumbled upon the snake while carrying out his duties in one of the plant’s “rag bins” where initial cleaning processes take place. Valdez expressed gratitude that the snake managed to climb out on its own and did not get caught in the machinery.
Valdez speculated that the snake had not been in the area for long due to frequent inspections. He suggested that the python likely escaped from someone’s house through a window or a doggy door and ended up in a curb catch basin.
Lynnette Bain, the executive director of the local humane society, estimated the female snake to be between three to five years old. Despite being a bit worn out from navigating tight spaces, the python is expected to fully recover under the society’s care. The snake is currently receiving medical treatment, hydration, and assistance with shedding.
Bain mentioned that the staff at the plant have rescued various animals from the screening system over the years, but snakes typically do not survive such encounters. The exact circumstances that led to the snake ending up in the sewer remain unclear, with the possibility of being flushed down the toilet or escaping through small spaces.
While the ultimate fate of the snake is uncertain, Bain stressed the importance of responsible pet ownership and urged owners not to release exotic pets into the wild. She noted that the snake cannot be adopted within the City of Windsor but may find a suitable home with individuals experienced in caring for ball pythons in the surrounding area.
