American legislators are seeking explanations from the Trump administration following allegations made by a Canadian individual who claims that U.S. border officials detained him for three hours, compelled him to provide a DNA sample, and then sent him back to Canada.
U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell, a Democrat from Michigan, expressed her dismay over the incident and, in partnership with Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, penned a letter to the Departments of Homeland Security, State, and Justice requesting details on the matter.
The lawmakers are concerned that such treatment at the border could strain the vital relationship between the U.S. and Canada, which has already been strained by President Trump’s rhetoric against Canadians and threats of annexation.
The demand for clarification comes amid reports of Canadians refraining from traveling to the U.S. due to apprehensions about potential mistreatment by border authorities.
Dingell was informed of the incident by a Substack journalist and subsequently connected with the Canadian individual, identified as a 68-year-old retired nuclear power plant employee residing near Kincardine, Ontario.
The individual, Kevin Larson, recounted his experience attempting to cross the border at the Blue Water Bridge near Sarnia, Ontario, to attend a rally in Port Huron, Michigan. Despite his previous uneventful border crossings, this time he faced extensive interrogation, searches, and ultimately denial of entry.
Customs officers demanded a DNA sample from Larson, who initially refused citing privacy concerns but eventually complied under threat of potential charges. Larson, perplexed by the alleged reasons for his denial, seeks the removal of his DNA data from the FBI database.
In response to the incident, Dingell and Raskin have demanded legal justifications for the DNA collection, information on potential similar cases, storage of genetic data, and procedures for its removal. They have emphasized the importance of the strong bond between Canada and the U.S. and vowed to pursue answers diligently.
Larson, meanwhile, has chosen to abstain from further U.S. trips for the time being, organizing local events instead, yet remains optimistic about restoring the enduring friendship between the two nations.
