“Security Breach: Youth Conceals Gun in RCMP Cell”

Share

Police officials have acknowledged a security breach at the Thompson RCMP detachment where a youth managed to conceal a firearm in a cell despite a prior search failing to locate it. The incident occurred on December 14, 2024, and the gun was discovered behind the toilet in the cell by cleaning staff two days later while the individual was being transferred to court. Subsequently, ammunition was found in the toilet bowl, according to a recent police statement.

Supt. Chris Massart, Manitoba RCMP’s north district commander, emphasized the gravity of the situation in an email to CBC News, stating that the breach was treated with utmost concern due to the potential risks it posed. The youth was initially arrested on weapons-related charges related to a machete assault and was later charged with additional firearms offenses.

Following a prompt report to management, a thorough review was conducted, which included analyzing video footage, interviewing staff, and examining police records. The review revealed that although the youth was searched before being placed in the cell, the search was deemed inadequate as the firearm was overlooked.

The firearm was never brandished or used in a threatening manner during the youth’s custody, and measures have since been implemented to prevent similar incidents. These measures include mandating all Thompson RCMP officers to review prisoner care and handling policies upon arrival at the detachment and every six months thereafter.

In response to inquiries about potential disciplinary actions, RCMP stated that details could not be disclosed due to privacy constraints but mentioned that the involved officer received operational guidance and underwent a performance evaluation. The focus remains on enhancing safety for employees, the public, and detainees under RCMP care.
