“Toronto Native Prince Oduro’s Basketball Journey Comes Full Circle”

Share

Prince Oduro once left his hometown of Toronto to pursue his basketball dreams, following the common path of Canadian players seeking success in the United States. However, after playing internationally for some time, he discovered that the opportunity he had been seeking was actually back home. As the most experienced player in the history of the Brampton Honey Badgers, Oduro’s journey mirrors the growth of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), redefining the notion of achieving success in Canada.

Initially playing Division 1 basketball in the U.S., Oduro faced challenges in securing consistent playing time. His fortunes changed when he joined the Hamilton Honey Badgers in 2022, which later became the Brampton Honey Badgers. Oduro expressed gratitude for the team that believed in him and provided him with the opportunity he had been seeking, leading to numerous positive outcomes.

Before embarking on his professional career, Oduro’s passion for basketball was cultivated in local Toronto gyms. Growing up in the west end of Toronto, he was inspired by the basketball culture in the city, particularly by NBA players like Tristian Thompson and Andrew Wiggins who frequented the same community center gym. Today, Oduro continues to experience the grassroots basketball culture through the CEBL, competing against familiar faces and playing in front of his family and friends.

Beyond his basketball pursuits, Oduro finds solace in poetry, a creative outlet that he developed during his school days. His passion for poetry remains strong, as he now shares his written works with students during school visits. Oduro’s multifaceted interests and talents contribute to his well-rounded personality both on and off the court.

Having been part of the championship-winning Honey Badgers team in 2022, Oduro is determined to achieve further success both personally and professionally with the organization. General manager Jermaine Anderson commended Oduro’s dedication and impact on the team, highlighting his evolution from a player to an ambassador for the organization and the community. As the new season approaches, Oduro looks forward to embracing the present moment, expressing gratitude for his current opportunities and aiming for continued growth.

The Honey Badgers will kick off their season on May 15 against the Ottawa BlackJacks, with the game set to be live-streamed on CBC Sports. In one of his poems, Oduro reflects on his journey, symbolizing how basketball has taken him to various places and now back to where it all began.
