U Sports’ Canada West conference has granted probationary membership to Simon Fraser University after a vote during the conference’s annual general meeting. SFU’s re-entry into the Canadian university sports realm is subject to U Sports’ approval at the upcoming annual meeting scheduled from June 2 to June 4 in St. John’s.

If the approval is secured, SFU’s men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, indoor track and field, soccer, swimming, and wrestling teams will participate in Canada West starting from the 2027-28 season. However, the conference has not yet approved SFU’s women’s volleyball team for participation.

Located in Burnaby, within Metro Vancouver, SFU will continue to be a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the 2026-27 season. SFU had previously competed in Canada West from 2000 to 2010 before transitioning to the U.S. varsity system by joining the NCAA.
