Forge FC secured a 2-0 victory over Atletico Ottawa in the Canadian Premier League season opener with goals from Brian Wright and Ben Paton in Hamilton, Ont. Wright, 31, converted a penalty kick after being fouled by goalkeeper Tristan Crampton in the early stages of the match. Despite Ottawa challenging the penalty call, the referee upheld the decision following a video review.

Paton extended Forge’s lead in the 68th minute with a close-range volley after a corner kick. Despite some late pressure from Ottawa, the scoreline remained 2-0 in favor of Forge at the final whistle.

Forge dominated the game statistically, recording more shots, shots on target, and big chances compared to Ottawa. The visitors struggled offensively, failing to register a single shot in the first half, despite having the majority of possession.

The upcoming matches will see Ottawa facing Cavalry FC in Calgary on April 12, while Forge will take on Vancouver FC on the same day. This season, the Canadian Premier League has implemented a new “daylight” offside rule to promote faster and more attacking play, with the aim of reducing delays caused by video reviews and controversies over offside decisions. Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, now FIFA’s chief of global football development, praised the Canadian league for testing this innovative rule, emphasizing its potential to enhance the game and minimize disruptions.
