Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to move into Rideau Cottage as the official residence due to the dilapidated state of 24 Sussex Drive, which has been left unoccupied since 2015. The historic home has faced issues such as mould, asbestos, lead, and rodents, leading to its deterioration over the years. Carney, who previously resided in Rockcliffe, Ottawa, had been staying at a guest residence temporarily for security reasons following his recent appointment.
The decision for Carney to move to Rideau Cottage was made based on security recommendations, according to the Privy Council Office (PCO) spokesperson Pierre-Alain Bujold. The cottage, located on the grounds of Rideau Hall, was previously occupied by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family. Trudeau had taken steps to address the ongoing challenges with 24 Sussex Drive by requesting options for a new official residence by January 2026.
Trudeau’s proposed options include constructing a new or extensively renovated complex on the current property, relocating to a more secure property in Rockcliffe Park, or upgrading Rideau Cottage. The estimated cost for these options ranges from tens of millions to over $100 million. The issue of 24 Sussex Drive has been a longstanding concern for Canadian leaders, with the government now taking steps to address the situation and provide a suitable living arrangement for the Prime Minister.
