In an unexpected development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported the reception of 54 unidentified bodies from Israel along with 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians believed to have perished during the two-year conflict with Hamas. Health authorities in Gaza have initiated the process of identifying the remains.
Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special committee for receiving bodies at Al-Shifa Hospital, verified that the hospital had received the unidentified bodies and remains late on Wednesday. He mentioned that they received intact bodies and human remains in closed boxes for forensic examination scheduled for the following day.
According to Al-Wahidi, there is a lack of information regarding how or where the individuals died, with no identifying details provided. He clarified that the remains sent to Gaza were not part of any truce agreement or a swap for Israeli hostages’ bodies.
Israeli authorities recently released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians. This release marked the final exchange between Israel and Hamas under the initial phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. Subsequently, Israeli forces recovered the remains of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, held in Gaza for over 840 days following the 2023 attack on Israel.
The transfer of 54 bodies from Israel to Gaza on Wednesday raised the total number of deceased individuals released by Israel to 414 since the commencement of the ceasefire deal on October 10, 2024. The return of the bodies was a key provision of the ceasefire deal’s first phase signed in October of the previous year.
Amani Al-Naouq, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed the ICRC’s role in facilitating the transfer. Al-Naouq highlighted the significant challenge faced by forensic authorities in identifying the remains amid limited resources and emphasized the numerous families seeking clarity about their missing loved ones.
Tragically, the handover of bodies coincided with another tragic day in Gaza, where Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a paramedic. The violence cast a shadow over the nearly four-month-old ceasefire, with the Israeli military attributing the strikes to retaliatory action against militants who had fired upon Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas, citing a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
