Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jamil Jivani disclosed that he engaged in discussions with officials from the Trump administration during his visit to Washington, aiming to enhance trade relations between Canada and the United States. Jivani conveyed that U.S. President Donald Trump had a message for Canadians, expressing his love for them. Following the meetings at the White House and State Department, Jivani shared the President’s message on social media.

Jivani, who has a friendship with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance from their university days, expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Liberal government before embarking on his trip. Despite his efforts, he indicated that he did not receive a positive response. The MP highlighted his intention to facilitate communication between the two countries during a video posted on social media.

Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned that Jivani was briefed by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. Carney emphasized the ongoing communication between the Liberal government and the U.S. administration, noting their extensive network of contacts. Jivani acknowledged the email exchange with LeBlanc but expressed the need for a face-to-face meeting to provide a comprehensive debrief on his Washington meetings.

Jivani shared his plans to meet with representatives from General Motors and other prominent figures in the automotive and manufacturing sectors during his visit. Additionally, he is scheduled to attend the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, a significant event attended by numerous political figures. Highlighting his close relationship with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, Jivani offers a unique perspective to contribute to trade discussions.

In his efforts to collaborate with the Liberals, Jivani sent multiple emails offering his assistance, citing the importance of unity in addressing trade challenges, particularly regarding the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Jivani stressed the need to bridge the divide between Conservatives and Liberals for the benefit of shared national interests. Conservative MP Gérard Deltell expressed his party’s willingness to support the government in negotiations with the Trump administration to ensure positive outcomes for Canadians.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the importance of advocating for local job opportunities, particularly in response to recent layoffs at GM Canada’s Oshawa plant. Jivani aims to address the urgency of job losses in his community with U.S. stakeholders. However, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly expressed skepticism regarding Jivani’s stance on denouncing GM’s actions and promoting the interests of affected workers facing challenges from American tariffs.
