Morrigan Daniels-Dion is currently mourning the tragic loss of her five-year-old daughter from a hospital bed, far away from her home. Lilith Eskilson Daniels-Dion White is fondly remembered by her mother as a source of light and joy. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have reported that the minivan carrying Daniels-Dion’s family was involved in a collision with a suspected stolen pickup truck on a highway near Cold Lake on January 13. Charges have been laid against a 34-year-old man from Bonnyville, including offenses such as failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, multiple counts of failing to stop at an accident causing injury, and theft of a motor vehicle.
Although Morrigan Daniels-Dion, aged 27, her partner Chase John, aged 30, and their 10-month-old daughter Charlie survived the incident, the emotional toll is profound. Speaking from her hospital room at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Daniels-Dion expressed deep devastation and emotional turmoil, labeling the experience as one of the toughest challenges she has ever faced. She has been confined to her hospital bed over 260 kilometers away from her residence on Frog Lake First Nation, grappling with the loss of her child.
In addition to the emotional distress, there are severe physical injuries to contend with. Daniels-Dion disclosed suffering from two broken ankles, a broken tibia, multiple broken ribs, and other injuries, while John sustained two broken femurs, broken ribs, and an upper arm fracture. Both have undergone surgeries, with Daniels-Dion awaiting further procedures before being discharged from the hospital. Their infant daughter Charlie only suffered mild bruising on her back.
The tragic passing of Lilith has not only deeply affected Morrigan’s family but also reverberated throughout the Cree community in Frog Lake. A vigil was held at Chief Napeweaw Comprehensive School, where over 200 community members, friends, and family gathered to honor Lilith’s life. Neyosa Quinney, the school principal and aunt to Lilith’s stepfather, highlighted the profound impact of Lilith’s death on the community, with students and staff feeling the weight of the tragedy.
The school community came together to offer prayers, comfort, and support, emphasizing the importance of unity during such difficult times. Tributes to Lilith adorned the school gym, with heartfelt messages displayed, demonstrating the love and support for the grieving family. Quinney expressed gratitude for the community’s support, mentioning the strength drawn from traditional practices and the presence of baby Charlie in helping cope with the loss.
Plans are underway to honor Lilith’s memory, with the school intending to commemorate her during the kindergarten graduation ceremony and naming a yurt at the new land-based language camp after her. Morrigan and her mother Sheila expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community during this challenging period, acknowledging the assistance and care provided by friends and relatives. They emphasized the importance of the community’s backing, underscoring the unity and blessings that come from such collective support.
