Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield was remanded without bond during his initial court appearance on Wednesday, following his surrender to authorities for alleged child sex abuse. The accusations relate to claims of improper contact with a minor while he was directing a TV series in New Mexico.
Appearing via video link from jail, where he was held since Tuesday, Busfield refrained from commenting during the brief court session and did not enter a plea. A detention hearing to decide his jail status will be arranged within five business days.
The preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 29. Albuquerque police issued an arrest warrant for Busfield last week on charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse, allegedly occurring during the filming of the series “The Cleaning Lady” in Albuquerque.
Married to fellow actor Melissa Gilbert, Busfield, known for roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” has declared his intent to challenge the allegations, dismissing them as falsehoods in a pre-surrender video.
Alleged misconduct spanning decades is under scrutiny by prosecutors who aim to keep Busfield incarcerated until trial. Citing a history of sexual misconduct, abuse of authority, and grooming behavior over 20 years, the prosecution emphasized concerns of witness fear regarding retaliation and professional repercussions.
Prosecutors argue that offenders in positions of authority, status, or influence are adept at evading accountability and bypassing safeguards meant to shield children. They contend that no release conditions could adequately protect victims or the community due to Busfield’s demonstrated disregard for boundaries and authority.
A judge will determine the validity of the prosecution’s request. The schedule for the detention hearing is pending. Prosecutors also criticized Busfield for releasing a video to TMZ, suggesting his focus on personal narrative control over compliance with the legal process.
According to the criminal complaint, a child reported instances of Busfield touching him inappropriately at ages seven and eight, expressing fear due to Busfield’s role as director. The boy’s twin brother corroborated the incidents but did not disclose details out of fear.
The twins’ mother reported the abuse to Child Protective Services, detailing incidents between November 2022 and spring 2024. Busfield denied the allegations in a police interview, attributing them to the twins’ replacement on the series and echoing these sentiments through his attorney.
The investigation commenced in November 2024 following a hospital report and alleged involvement of a law firm. Despite Busfield’s attorney citing Warner Bros.’ unsuccessful findings, prosecutors criticized the investigation for failing to interview crucial witnesses.
