Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, a renowned film prop, was recently auctioned off for $3.75 million US (approximately $5.15 million Cdn), revealed Heritage Auctions on Wednesday. Crafted by Stuart Freeborn, the makeup artist from “Star Wars,” the lightsaber includes a model-cast of actor Mark Hamill’s hand, which detached in a famous scene. Initially set with a starting bid of $1 million US ($1.42 million Cdn), the final sale price surpassed expectations, setting a new record for screen-used “Star Wars” props, as reported by the Dallas auction house.
The lightsaber was used in the climactic duel between Luke and Darth Vader in the 1980 film “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back,” where the iconic phrase “I am your father” was revealed. Stuart Freeborn, known for creating characters like Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, and Chewbacca, held onto the prop until Heritage Auctions acquired it in 1994.
This sale eclipsed previous records, including the $3.135 million US ($4.44 million Cdn) sale of a 50-centimeter X-wing starfighter prop in 2023 and the $3.6 million US ($5.1 million Cdn) sale of Darth Vader’s lightsaber from “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” Yet, it falls short of the $3.875 million US ($5.49 million Cdn) sale of a half-sheet “key poster” painting for “A New Hope” in 2025.
According to Heritage Auctions executive vice president Joe Maddalena, the auction highlights the rising interest in entertainment collectibles, with fans from the 1970s and ’80s driving prices up as they reconnect with the movies that shaped their youth.
The market for entertainment memorabilia remains robust, with props from various films fetching high prices. Heritage Auctions has played a significant role in these sales, reflecting the growing recognition of popular culture’s significance.
Unlike paintings, film props are typically not resold frequently, holding sentimental value for fans of the original production or artist. When Leonard Cohen’s personal effects were auctioned last year, items like a personal composition notebook and symbolic mementos garnered significant interest and bids.
Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have also ventured into collecting iconic film-worn items, from Princess Diana’s pendant to Jackie Kennedy’s watch. These pieces of history hold immense value and fascination for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
