“Winnipeg Transit Boosts Police Presence for Safety”

Share

Winnipeg Transit is implementing a new safety measure by increasing police presence along bus routes and at transit facilities to address a surge in violent and disruptive incidents. Both uniformed and undercover officers will be deployed on buses and in areas surrounding transit stops, including stations and shelters. Winnipeg police Supt. Brian Miln emphasized that the focus will be on individuals engaging in violent or disruptive behaviors while using the transit system.

The city highlighted a significant rise in reported violent crimes at Winnipeg Transit locations over the past five years, with 325 incidents reported in 2024 alone. Mayor Scott Gillingham emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring safety for all Winnipeggers using public transportation and condemned any violent or disruptive behavior on buses or at transit stops.

This initiative follows the city’s crackdown on fare evasion, which costs the transit service millions of dollars annually. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 revealed that a high percentage of violent incidents involve fare evaders. Union president Chris Scott expressed optimism that the increased police presence would enhance safety for both passengers and transit operators.

Daily commuter Cole Cornies welcomed the heightened police presence, citing potential safety benefits. Meanwhile, some passengers like Kaari Landry expressed discomfort with the addition of plainclothes and uniformed officers, while Jessica Limneos shared mixed feelings about the changes due to her infrequent bus use.

Police Supt. Miln described the safety initiative as a collaborative effort involving transit staff and the city’s Community Safety Team. The temporary measure will utilize existing police resources without incurring extra costs, with a review planned at the end of the year to determine the continuation of police patrols on the transit system in 2026.
