“Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Imports Amid China Deal Concerns”

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning, threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports if Canada engages in any agreements with China. This bold stance follows Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which was seen as a direct response to U.S. policies.

Trump, in a social media post, did not clarify the specifics of what constitutes a “deal.” Canada recently finalized an agreement with China allowing 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into its market at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1 percent in exchange for lowered tariffs on Canadian canola.

Expressing concern, the U.S. president stated in his post that allowing Canada to become a “Drop Off Port” for Chinese goods destined for the U.S. would be a mistake. He further warned that China would greatly impact Canada’s economy, businesses, and way of life.

In a subsequent post, Trump emphasized that he would not permit China to take control of Canada. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc clarified that there is no intention of pursuing a free trade deal with China, emphasizing that the recent agreement focused on resolving key tariff issues.

Trump’s recent rhetoric diverges from his initial reaction to the Canada-China agreement, where he initially viewed it positively. However, he later rescinded an invitation for Carney to participate in his “Board of Peace” initiative for Gaza.

Ministers and premiers in Canada have pushed back against Trump’s threats. Justice Minister Sean Fraser defended Carney, highlighting his leadership role in the country and the importance of his message. Culture Minister Marc Miller acknowledged Trump’s statement as serious but emphasized the need to focus on what Canada can control.

Provincial leaders, such as Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and B.C. Premier David Eby, have voiced their support for Carney, emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty and resilience in the face of external pressures.
