Canadian Para skier Alexis Guimond secured a gold medal in the men’s standing super-G event at a recent World Cup competition held in Saalbach, Austria. Hailing from Gatineau, Quebec, Guimond crossed the finish line in a swift time of one minute and three seconds, clinching the top spot on the podium. Following closely behind, Arthur Bauchet of France clocked in at 1:03.06 to claim the silver medal, while Aleksei Bugaev of Russia settled for the bronze with a time of 1:03.81.
Guimond, who had previously triumphed in a downhill race earlier in the week, has dominated all three super-G races he has participated in this season, boasting a total of seven podium finishes in 10 World Cup races. Expressing his satisfaction with his performance, Guimond mentioned, “It was a challenging race today. I navigated some tough sections while maintaining my speed. The consecutive wins have bolstered my confidence this season, and I feel well-prepared on my speed skis. The team’s positive momentum is infectious, and I am thrilled to contribute to it.”
Meanwhile, fellow Canadian Kurt Oatway clinched the bronze medal in the men’s sitting event, completing the race in 1:04.75. Jeroen Kampschreur of the Netherlands secured the gold with a time of 1:03.24, while Takeshi Suzuki of an impressive 1:04.53 earned him the silver medal.
Oatway, representing Calgary, expressed his satisfaction with his performance, especially considering he had been recovering from an injury. He stated, “Returning to racing after my injury in November feels rewarding. Despite missing a significant portion of the World Cup season, securing a podium finish reassures me of my skills and sets the stage for further progress as we advance through the World Cup season and head towards the Paralympic Games in Cortina.”
Additionally, Mollie Jepsen from West Vancouver, British Columbia, clinched the bronze medal in the women’s standing super-G category, finishing with a time of 1:09.26 seconds—marking her seventh podium finish in 10 races this season. Jepsen expressed her contentment with her consistent performance, stating, “I am pleased with my performance in the super-G events. While there is room for improvement, I am encouraged by my progress. Witnessing Kurt and Alexis excel today was a significant achievement for the team, and we are all diligently working towards success in Milano Cortina.”
Varvara Voronchikhina secured the gold with a time of 1:07.93, followed by France’s Aurelie Richard who claimed the silver with a time of 1:08.54. Michaela Gosselin from Collingwood, Ontario, finished in fifth place with a time of 1:13.08.
