“Pakistan and Afghanistan Escalate Conflict to ‘Open War’ Status”

Share

Pakistan and Afghanistan engaged in a series of attacks, leading to heightened tensions described by Pakistan’s defense minister as an “open war.” The conflict escalated when Afghanistan launched a cross-border assault in retaliation for recent deadly Pakistani airstrikes on Afghan border regions. Pakistan responded with airstrikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, targeting military installations.

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid asserted that the attacks aimed at key military targets in Pakistan to demonstrate Afghanistan’s capability to retaliate against any hostile actions. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared the situation as an open war, expressing disappointment over the deteriorating relations since NATO forces withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.

Asif criticized the Taliban for transforming Afghanistan into what he termed a “colony of India,” highlighting the historical animosity between Pakistan and India. The ongoing tensions have been fueled by border clashes, with Pakistan accusing Afghanistan of harboring militant groups, collaborating with India, and exporting terrorism. Both countries have exchanged accusations of supporting insurgent factions operating within each other’s territories.

The conflicting casualty claims following the recent skirmishes have further intensified the hostilities. Pakistan reported significant casualties among Afghan forces and affiliated militants, while Afghanistan disputed these figures, alleging a higher toll on Pakistani soldiers. The situation remains volatile, with sporadic violence continuing despite previous ceasefire agreements and failed peace talks.

International calls for de-escalation and diplomatic resolution have been issued by the United Nations, Iran, and Russia, urging both countries to prioritize civilian protection and seek peaceful dialogue. The neighboring countries have a history of strained relations, aggravated by border security issues, refugee displacement, and external influences. The region remains on edge as efforts to quell the conflict and restore stability face significant challenges.
