The Alberta government has initiated an investigation following the death of a 44-year-old man at an emergency department in Edmonton. Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services, Matt Jones, announced on social media that Acute Care Alberta and Covenant Health will collaborate to examine the events surrounding the passing of Prashant Sreekumar at Grey Nuns Community Hospital.
Sreekumar, who was suffering from chest pain, passed away after reportedly waiting for nearly eight hours to receive medical attention in the emergency room. According to his wife, Niharika Sreekumar, he began experiencing chest pain while at work, and after being taken to the hospital by a client, he spent most of the time waiting in the ER waiting area.
Niharika expressed frustration, stating that her husband was in urgent need of medical care and was not attended to promptly, despite his deteriorating condition. Family friend Varindar Bhullar mentioned that initial assessments did not reveal any issues, but Sreekumar’s blood pressure continued to rise, ultimately leading to a fatal cardiac arrest.
Acute Care Alberta has committed to participating in the review process and implementing any necessary changes based on the findings. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also launched an independent investigation into the incident. Covenant Health declined to provide detailed comments on the case due to patient privacy concerns.
A fundraising initiative has been organized by a family friend to support Prashant Sreekumar’s family, including his wife and three children, aged three, 10, and 14. Niharika praised her late husband as a devoted father and provider, emphasizing the impact of his loss on their family’s future.
