Bill Gates took accountability for his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a town hall meeting with Gates Foundation employees, as per a spokesperson for the philanthropic organization. This statement was in response to a report from the Wall Street Journal that referenced Gates’ remarks at the town hall.
Records from the U.S. Department of Justice revealed multiple meetings between Gates and Epstein post the latter’s prison release to discuss expanding Gates’ philanthropic work. Gates acknowledged the error in spending time with Epstein and involving Gates Foundation executives in meetings with him, expressing regret for the situation.
Gates clarified that his interactions with Epstein were solely focused on philanthropy and denied engaging in any illicit activities. The Gates Foundation confirmed that no financial transactions occurred between them and Epstein. The foundation also addressed Gates’ acknowledgment during the town hall meeting, emphasizing his acceptance of responsibility for his actions.
Furthermore, Gates mentioned that the images with redacted faces, as seen in DOJ documents, were taken at Epstein’s request with his assistants after their meetings, clarifying that he never associated with Epstein’s victims.
Melinda Gates French, Bill Gates’ former wife, has publicly stated that the Epstein connection played a role in their marital issues. Gates also disclosed to foundation employees that he had extramarital affairs with Russian women, which Epstein later discovered, though these women were not Epstein’s victims.
The Epstein Transparency Act mandated the release of extensive files related to Epstein’s investigations, leading to scrutiny of individuals associated with him. Various figures, including former U.S. treasury secretary Larry Summers and Nobel laureate Dr. Richard Axel, have resigned from their positions due to their ties with Epstein. Additionally, individuals like Peter Attia, Thorbjørn Jagland, Peter Mandelson, and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor are facing legal or professional consequences following revelations from the released files.
