“Kenbassis River Fisherman Defies Tradition, Embraces Social Ice Fishing”

Share

Mike Donovan opts for a non-traditional approach to ice fishing on the Kennebasis River in Rothesay, eschewing the typical shacks for a more social experience. Fishing from his lawn chair or a small pop-up tent when it’s windy, Donovan enjoys engaging with fellow anglers rather than being enclosed. Despite over 40 years of fishing experience, he disapproves of the Town of Rothesay’s recent installation of a gate to restrict vehicles and shacks on the river, a move that has been met with disappointment by the fishing community.

The town’s decision to impose restrictions stems from years of dealing with abandoned shacks and litter left behind at the end of the ice fishing season. Deputy Mayor Matt Alexander expressed regret over the situation, citing instances of shacks becoming dumping grounds for garbage, including large items like a Hide-A-Bed. Cleanup efforts have intensified, with Donovan and a group of concerned individuals actively participating in post-season cleanups to maintain the area’s cleanliness.

While some support the town’s ban on shacks, Donovan advocates for collaboration between the fishing community and authorities to address the issue, rather than a complete eradication of the shacks. Alexander echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a joint effort to ensure proper maintenance of the ice fishing area. Amidst the changes, local businesses are witnessing a surge in demand for rentals of pop-up tents and manufactured shacks.

Jack Ross, owner of Kennebecasis Ice Adventures, acknowledges the current trend but hopes for a resolution that accommodates both temporary and permanent structures on the ice. Concerns linger among fishing enthusiasts like Donovan, who fear that the elimination of shacks may lead to a decline in the iconic winter village at Renforth. The vibrant, customized shacks have not only been a local favorite but also attracted tourists from around the globe, contributing to the area’s unique cultural charm and creating memorable experiences for visitors.
