“AER Orders MAGA Energy to Halt Operations Over Environmental, Compliance Issues”

Share

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has instructed MAGA Energy Ltd., an oil and gas company, to halt its operations due to unresolved environmental issues and non-compliance problems, such as outstanding taxes and fees for cleaning up orphan wells. The AER made the announcement on Thursday, revealing that the order was issued the day before. MAGA Energy has a two-week deadline to cease production at its wells, deactivate equipment at its sites, and discontinue using active pipelines, as stated in the directive from the regulatory body.

Currently, MAGA Energy manages 581 wells, 108 facilities, and 801 pipeline segments, according to the AER. The AER emphasized in a press release that its actions are aimed at safeguarding the public and the environment. The agency cited MAGA Energy’s failure to pay municipal taxes, debts to the AER and Orphan Well Association, and non-compliance with regulatory obligations as reasons for the suspension.

The directive specifies a set of conditions that MAGA Energy must resolve before resuming operations, including addressing remediation concerns at various sites, completing pending field inspections, and allocating the minimum required funds for inactive site cleanup. Sturgeon County reported to CBC News that MAGA Energy owes over $356,000 in property taxes and penalties, with uncertainties about recovering the amount if the company dissolves.

The Energy Minister’s office, in response to the situation, expressed that the order to suspend MAGA Energy’s operations demonstrates the effectiveness of Alberta’s policies and regulations. However, Janetta McKenzie of the Pembina Institute highlighted concerns about regulatory delays and leniency towards oil and gas companies. McKenzie emphasized the potential risks associated with orphan wells and the inadequacy of the current levy system in covering cleanup costs.

Landowner Mark Dorin, affected by MAGA Energy’s operations, criticized the company’s tax delinquency and lack of benefits to the public. He intends to seek compensation through the Land and Property Rights Tribunal under the Surface Rights Act, acknowledging the prolonged process and financial burdens involved. MAGA Energy had not responded to CBC’s request for comment at the time of reporting.
