“Community Workshop Addresses ArcelorMittal’s Pollution Request”

Share

A community workshop is scheduled to discuss ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s request to the province for “flexibility” regarding air and noise pollution regulations. The steel company has applied to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks to renew permissions allowing it to exceed Ontario’s noise and contaminant limits, as stated by the Environmental Registry of Ontario. Feedback from the public can be submitted through the registry until March 12.

Citizens Against Pollution, a local community group, will host an in-person workshop on Tuesday to assist individuals in submitting comments. The workshop will take place at the City Lounge on the second floor of Hamilton Stadium, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s application pertains to “operational flexibility” during various stages of manufacturing processes such as coke, iron, steel production, rolling, coating lines, finishing, and boilers. Emissions from the facility include substances like total suspended particulate matter, benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, manganese, sulphur dioxide, and noise pollution.

In another event related to the discussion on air and noise pollution, the Ward 4 councillor’s office and the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) will host a session titled “Healthy Yards — Conversations about Air and Noise Pollution” at the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will feature discussions led by CELA, Environment Hamilton, local resident Jochen Bezner on advocacy efforts, and McMaster University Prof. Sarah Styler on soot research. The presentations will also be live-streamed on YouTube.
