Sunwing Vacations has decided to extend and expand its suspension of activities in Cuba due to the island’s ongoing lack of oil supplies. The suspension covers all operations of Sunwing Vacations Group, including Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations, and Vacances WestJet Quebec in Cuba, from June 20 to Oct. 9.
Initially planned flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco for the summer season have been canceled and will resume on Oct. 10, as per a statement from Sunwing to CBC News. Additionally, services to Holguin, Santa Clara, Cayo Largo, and Cienfuegos will recommence on Oct. 25.
Sunwing, a subsidiary of WestJet Group, is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates accordingly. Affected customers will be offered alternative options, while vacation destinations like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay remain accessible.
The disruption in oil supplies to Cuba began when airports on the island raised concerns about diminishing jet fuel availability in February. Following this, major Canadian airlines suspended flights to Cuba, with plans to resume services on April 26.
The oil supply cut to Cuba was a direct result of U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. Trump’s executive order imposing tariffs on countries selling oil to Cuba further exacerbated the situation, hindering the nation’s access to fuel.
The oil crisis has significantly impacted daily life for Cuban locals, leading to sporadic nationwide blackouts and a surge in prices of essential groceries.
