“Rafah Border Crossing Set to Reopen, Bringing Hope to Gaza”

Share

Palestinians in Gaza view the Rafah border crossing as their main connection to the outside world. However, the crossing has been mostly closed since Israel took control of it in May 2024. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now announced plans to reopen the crossing soon as part of the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement.

The potential reopening of the Rafah border crossing brings hope to numerous Palestinians, including those in urgent need of medical treatment abroad and individuals stranded outside Gaza. The controlled reopening, according to Netanyahu’s conditions, will allow only a limited number of Palestinians to cross each day without the transport of any goods. All other border crossings of Gaza are with Israel.

An Israeli official, speaking anonymously, has indicated that the Rafah crossing is expected to reopen in the coming days, possibly as early as Thursday. Ali Shaath, the new head of Gaza’s administrative committee, confirmed that the crossing is set to open bidirectionally next week, signaling a positive step towards Gaza’s reconnection with the world.

Aid organizations are advocating for increased access and the provision of essential goods through the Rafah crossing. The United Nations stresses the importance of opening the crossing for both humanitarian and commercial purposes to aid in the recovery of Gaza’s economy.

The Rafah crossing’s operations will involve several countries and institutions overseeing the process, with Israel retaining control over the entry and exit of individuals. Egypt will collaborate with Israel to vet and approve daily lists of travelers. The ceasefire terms mandate Israel’s military to manage the area near the crossing, with Palestinians being bussed to and from the crossing by COGAT, Israel’s aid coordination body for Gaza.

The reopening of the Rafah crossing signifies a significant development, as it has been a contentious issue for Palestinians due to historical restrictions and closures. Netanyahu’s focus remains on disarming Hamas and eliminating remaining tunnels as part of the ceasefire’s second phase, emphasizing the importance of demilitarization for any prospects of reconstruction in Gaza.
