“ICC Rules Duterte Fit for Trial in Human Rights Case”

The International Criminal Court judges declared on Monday that former Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte is capable of standing trial after delaying a previous hearing due to health concerns. Duterte faces charges of crimes against humanity related to numerous killings during his anti-drug campaign as mayor and later as president. His lawyers had argued that his health was declining, but after medical assessments, the court deemed him fit for the legal proceedings, setting a new hearing date for February 23.

A panel of medical experts evaluated Duterte, including assessments in geriatric neurology and psychiatry. His lead lawyer expressed disappointment with the decision and plans to appeal, noting the defense’s inability to present its medical evidence. Human rights organizations and victims’ families welcomed Duterte’s arrest and the court’s decision as a triumph for justice and accountability.

The ICC prosecutors allege that Duterte authorized violent acts, including murder, against alleged criminals, particularly drug dealers and users. The investigation into Duterte’s anti-drug campaign began in 2018, spanning his time as mayor in Davao and later as president. Despite the Philippines’ withdrawal from the court, judges ruled that the case would proceed, emphasizing that countries cannot misuse their withdrawal to shield individuals from justice for alleged crimes already under consideration.

Various estimates suggest a wide range of death tolls during Duterte’s presidency, from over 6,000 reported by the national police to as high as 30,000 according to human rights groups.
