Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has decided to withdraw from seeking a third term, just under four months since announcing his re-election campaign. Having been part of the Democratic U.S. presidential ticket alongside Kamala Harris last year, Walz expressed in a statement on Monday that he no longer had the necessary energy to secure another term, despite his belief in his potential victory.
Citing the ongoing focus on fraud cases and labeling it an exceptionally challenging year for the state, Walz highlighted the achievements during his initial seven-year term in office. The Trump administration, along with other Republicans, has persistently highlighted a fraud investigation involving child-care programs in Minnesota through social media posts and right-wing cable news interviews. Last week, the administration announced a freeze on child-care funds to Minnesota and requested an audit of specific daycare centers following several fraud instances in state government programs.
Accusing Trump and his allies of attempting to create division and negativity in the state, Walz criticized the administration’s decision to withhold funds for these programs. The strained relationship between Trump and Walz has persisted post the 2024 campaign, with Trump refraining from offering condolences to Walz after the tragic deaths of former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband.
On social media platform Truth Social, Trump shared an unfounded conspiracy theory linking Walz to Hortman’s death, a move strongly condemned by both Walz and Hortman’s children. Walz denounced Trump’s behavior, labeling it dangerous and depraved.
Walz’s journey from high school teaching and coaching football to politics was notable, with Harris recognizing his diverse experiences in advocating for working families when she selected him as her running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Growing up in West Point, Nebraska, Walz taught social studies, coached football, and served in the U.S. national guard for 24 years before entering politics.
Throughout his time as governor, Walz navigated a divided legislature, working across party lines to achieve compromises. His terms witnessed significant legislative changes, including the elimination of state abortion restrictions, protection of gender-affirming care for transgender youth, and the legalization of recreational marijuana. However, his tenure was marred by a sizable pandemic food fraud scheme involving the non-profit Feeding Our Future.
With Walz opting out of the gubernatorial race, a crowded field of Republicans is vying for the nomination in the upcoming election year. The gubernatorial elections in 2026 will see contests in 36 states, with Minnesota being one of them.
