“Deaf Ringette Star Inspires Teammates with Speed and Strategy”

Leah Partridge, a dedicated ringette player for the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, showcases exceptional speed and game awareness on the ice. Despite being profoundly deaf in both ears since birth, Partridge, a fourth-year psychology student and assistant team captain, has been immersed in the sport since the age of four. Recently, she participated in the Canadian University Ringette Challenge Cup alongside her team.

Embracing the fast-paced nature of ringette, Partridge finds the intensity of the game thrilling and ever-changing. Due to her limited hearing capabilities, even with the assistance of hearing aids that are prone to damage during matches, Partridge relies heavily on visual cues to navigate the game and interact with her teammates. This adaptation has honed her ability to read plays effectively and contribute strategically to the team.

Originally from Londesborough, Ont., Partridge’s passion for ringette was inspired by her sister’s involvement in the sport at Brock University. Upon joining the Golden Hawks, her hearing impairment initially went unnoticed, but the team quickly adjusted their communication methods to accommodate her needs. Through face-to-face interactions and strategic positioning on the ice, Partridge remains engaged and contributes significantly to the team’s dynamics.

Despite occasional challenges, Partridge’s confidence and experience in the sport have equipped her to overcome obstacles. Supported by her teammates and coaches, she has embraced a leadership role as assistant team captain, fostering a positive and inclusive environment both on and off the ice. Looking ahead, Partridge envisions a future in ringette beyond university, potentially exploring opportunities in leagues such as the National Ringette League.

At the recent Canadian University Ringette Challenge Cup, the Golden Hawks competed fiercely but fell short in the consolation final, ultimately losing to the University of Western Ontario’s Mustangs. However, Partridge’s resilience and determination continue to inspire her team, highlighting her invaluable contributions to the sport and the team’s spirit.
