“Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment Saves $150M”

A successful nuclear refurbishment project has been finalized at the Darlington power plant, with the unit primed for imminent reactivation. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce revealed the completion ahead of schedule, noting a remarkable $150 million savings under the $12.8 billion total budget. The comprehensive refurbishment encompassed all four nuclear reactor units, ensuring the station’s operational viability until at least 2055.

The government under Premier Doug Ford is emphasizing nuclear energy to address the escalating electricity demands in the province. Plans include integrating four small modular reactors at Darlington and contemplating a new large-scale facility at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario. Additionally, considerations are underway for a new nuclear plant near Port Hope and extending the lifespan of units at the Pickering nuclear plant.
