Novak Djokovic exits players’ association – cites misalignment

Novak Djokovic has decided to part ways with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an organization he helped establish and which filed a lawsuit against tennis governing bodies last year. Djokovic expressed on social media that his values and vision no longer align with the current direction of the association.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner had introduced the PTPA alongside retired player Vasek Pospisil during the 2020 U.S. Open. Their primary objective was to provide representation for independent contractor players in the individual-focused sport of tennis. While they aimed to evolve into a union negotiating collective bargaining agreements like those found in team sports, this ambition has not materialized.

Djokovic highlighted concerns about transparency, governance, and the representation of his voice and image within the organization. The PTPA initiated a class-action lawsuit in March against tennis tours, the International Tennis Federation, and the sport’s integrity agency, alleging systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices, and neglect of player welfare. Subsequently, the four major Grand Slam tournaments were also included as defendants.

Although Djokovic did not join as a plaintiff at the lawsuit’s onset, he urged other players to take a stand. The legal action aimed to secure increased earnings for players by contesting the prize money limitations imposed by the governing bodies overseeing Grand Slam events and professional tournaments.

Djokovic declared his intention to refocus on his tennis career, family, and contributing to the sport in alignment with his principles and integrity. He conveyed best wishes to fellow players and stakeholders as they forge ahead, signifying the closure of this chapter for him.
