Global fashion icons, along with the general public, gathered on Friday morning in Rome to bid farewell to the legendary designer Valentino at his funeral service held at the central Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. The funeral served as the final tribute to the renowned designer following a two-day public viewing at the Valentino Foundation’s headquarters in Rome earlier in the week.
Among the attendees were prominent figures in the fashion industry like Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour, as well as celebrities including Anne Hathaway. Outside the church, fans and admirers paid their respects, some donning red attire or accessories as a nod to Valentino’s iconic color.
Valentino Garavani, who passed away at the age of 93 in his Rome residence, was beloved by numerous royals, first ladies, and celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Julia Roberts, who credited the designer for always making them look and feel their best.
Having kept his atelier in Rome, Valentino predominantly unveiled his collections in Paris, garnering acclaim for his exquisite gowns showcased at prestigious events like the Academy Awards, where stars like Cate Blanchett and Julia Roberts donned his creations.
During the funeral service, Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s longtime partner, expressed gratitude for the beauty and inspiration the designer instilled in their lives, reminiscing about their shared dreams and accomplishments. The emotional ceremony was a poignant tribute to the lasting legacy of the fashion maestro.
