A Newfoundland and Labrador biologist suggests that four canines spotted in a moose protection area in western Newfoundland may be a mix of a coyote, wolf, or large dog. Shane Mahoney mentioned that the animals appear to be hybrids, possibly with domestic dogs or wolves. Instances of wolf-coyote hybrids have been previously reported in the region.
The potential hybrids were observed near Goose Arm, between Deer Lake and Corner Brook. Videos and photos of these animals have circulated online, sparking curiosity about their genetic composition. Mahoney, while hoping for testing to confirm their lineage, noted unique coat colors of black, white, and shades of grey, which differ from typical coyotes.
These canine-like creatures displaying pack behavior raise questions about their numbers and predator effectiveness. Despite their hybrid nature, Mahoney reassures that they pose no additional risk to humans compared to regular coyotes or dogs. Precautions should be taken when encountering wildlife in such areas.
