“3D-Printed Feeding Stand Saves Foster Kitten Piglet”

A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical issue. The kitten, named Piglet and aged five months, was being cared for by Angela and Jason Lyall. Upon arrival at just two days old, Piglet struggled with feeding, failing to suckle properly even as a bottle-fed kitten. Despite being part of a litter with her mother, Piglet, from a local rescue called Sammy’s Forgotten Felines, did not grow like her siblings.

As time passed, Piglet developed pneumonia, prompting thoughts of euthanasia due to her deteriorating condition. However, veterinary tests revealed she likely had megaesophagus, a condition impairing the normal movement of food down to her stomach. This anomaly posed risks of regurgitation and inhalation into the lungs if she ate like a typical kitten.

To address Piglet’s eating challenge, the couple 3D printed a vertical feeding stand, designed by Jason based on a free internet template. The stand facilitated regular feeding, leading to visible improvements in Piglet’s health, including proper fur growth and weight gain. A video showcasing Piglet’s feeder went viral on social media, garnering over a million views and serving as an educational tool for cat owners about the rare megaesophagus condition in felines.

Angela emphasized the need for consistent feeding and post-meal upright positioning for Piglet, requiring a concerted family effort five times a day. Despite facing uncertainties about Piglet’s survival, Angela expressed gratitude for witnessing the kitten’s remarkable progress and resilience. The adaptable nature of the vertical feeding stand allows for modifications as Piglet continues to grow, ensuring her ongoing care and well-being.
