Home Bargains is opening a brand new store in the coming weeks – and shoppers are excited. The new site – which will also include a new cafe and garden centre – will be opening in Newport, Wales on May 31.
The brand new retail park store is part of a £10million investment into the city and will create 90 new jobs. The new 3,000 square metre store will be situated at Mendalgief Retail Park on Docks Way and is “twice the size” of the older Home Bargains store located on Newport Retail Park.
The new site will also feature a 175-space car park which will have spaces for families and disabled people, as well as a bike shelter.
The park has been built on the site of an old Lidl supermarket and its former neighbouring shops, which included a smaller Home Bargains store. All of these stores were demolished back in May 2024 to make way for this new site.
The retailer is currently in the process of hiring staff for the site, with both full and part time positions available. Adverts are currently live for “Team Leaders” which are full-time roles earning £30,887 a year according to the retailer’s wbsite.
They are also hiring team members to work in the new café and bakery, who are set to earn between £12.21 and £12.50 per hour.

According to its website, Home Bargains has over 575 stores across the UK and plans to open more branches. In March, the retailer had plans approved for a new site in Watford
Last month, Home Bargains was forced to recall a number of its Waster Products over concerns they could pose a serious choking hazard to children. Rabbit and chick plush toys sold in the run-up to Easter 2025 have both been found to have weaknesses that could allow children to pull them apart.
The toys were flagged by the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards, which said in a statement: “The products present a serious risk of asphyxiation as it has been identified that the limbs of the toy can become easily detached due to the weakness of the seams As a result, the internal fibrous stuffing material is easily accessible. A child may access the stuffing material and place it in their mouth.”
The products in question are the retailer’s Happy Easter Plush Toys 25cm (Pink Rabbit, White Rabbit and Yellow Chick). They were made in China and have the barcode 10811016. Home Bargains withdrew the products from the market and recalled them. Customers were also asked to return them to the store for a full refund – even without the receipt.
