A popular high street clothing chain is closing one of its stores this weekend.
Yours Clothing is pulling down the shutters on its branch in the Birmingham Bullring shopping centre on March 15. The next nearest store is located around 7.6 miles away in West Bromwich, or there is the Merry Hill branch which is 13.5 miles away. A notice in the store reads: “Sorry, we’re closing down.
“Our last day is Saturday 15th March. Your nearest stores are West Bromwich and Merry Hill but we’re always open at yoursclothing.co.uk. Thank you for shopping with us, we’ll see you soon.” The store has launched a sale with 20% off to help clear remaining stock.
It comes after Yours Clothing shut down its branch in the Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in February last year. Yours Clothing specialises in plus-size clothing for women and men and was founded in 1994. It is owned by AK Retail, which also operates M&Co, Evans Clothing, Long Tall Sally, BadRhino, and PixieGirl.
But the fashion chain is just one in a long list of retailers that have announced store closures in recent months. Select Fashion is closing high street stores over the next few weeks. The struggling retailer collapsed into administration in 2019 and entered into a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) last summer. It is understood Select will have just 48 stores left after the closures have taken place.
Analysis from the Centre for Retail Research shows 13,479 stores, the equivalent of 37 each day, shut for good in 2024. Homebase collapsed into administration in November 2024, with retail group CDS, owner of The Range, later agreeing a deal to snap up around 70 stores.
Some stores were also taken over by Sainsbury’s and B&Q, but others have sadly closed for good. Most recently, Homebase announced it was closing 33 in February. Meanwhile, gardening chain Dobbies announced more store closures in February, taking the total number of stores it has closed since last October to 24.
Meanwhile, WHSmith is exploring a potential sale of its 500 high street stores, as it focuses its attention on its travel locations, so shops in airports and train stations. WHSmith has already shut eight shops this year, in locations including Basingstoke, Winton, Rhyl, and Bolton – but a further ten stores will soon be pulling down the shutters for good, in a major blow for shoppers. The next store to close will be the Accrington, Lancashire branch, which will shut for the final time on March 15.
