A 93-year-old woman has been found dead, sparking a murder investigation as Greater Manchester Police made an arrest.
Officers investigating the death of the pensioner have arrested a 39-year-old woman on suspicion of murder and a cordon remains around the house where the body was discovered. Police were called to the house at around 9.40am where they found the remains of the elderly woman inside. After completing their initial enquiries, the officers arrested a 39-year-old woman on suspicion of murder who remains in custody, as investigations into the incident continue in the area and witnesses are urged to come forward.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “Officers were called to an address on Altrincham Road at 9:38am. Sadly, a 93-year-old woman was found deceased in the property.
“Police attended and following initial enquiries at the scene, a 39-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder. She remains in police custody. A scene is in place whilst investigators conduct their enquiries.”
Anyone with information into the incident are urged to come forward. Detective Inspector Adam Hitchen, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.
“The priority for our investigation is understanding the full circumstances which led to this tragic incident and getting justice for the victim. We recognise this investigation may cause concern within the local community, but I want to assure the public this is an isolated incident, with a swift arrest made, and no wider threat.
“You will notice an increased presence in the area today whilst we conduct enquiries, but also across the coming days as the local neighbourhood team look to provide reassurance to those living close by. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact police on 101 quoting the log number 726 of 16/04/25.”
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed they attended the scene to investigate concerns around gas. A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At around 10am today, firefighters were called to reports of a gas leak on Altrincham Road in Gatley.
“Three fire engines from Cheadle, Whitehill and Stockport fire stations quickly arrived at the scene. Crews used gas monitoring equipment within the property and found no abnormal readings. Checks were also carried out to the neighbouring property as a precautionary measure. Crews were at the scene for around an hour.”
